Mortar joints are the first thing to go on any masonry chimney. Once the joints erode, water gets in behind the brick or stone, freezes, and starts pushing the whole structure apart. Repointing, cutting out the failed mortar and packing in new, is the single most cost-effective repair you can do to extend a chimney's life. We rake the joints to the right depth, match the mortar mix to the original, and tool the finish to shed water properly. Done right, a repoint job lasts 20-30 years.
Chimney Rebuilds & Crown Repair
Sometimes repointing isn't enough. A chimney crown that's cracked, a flashing that's failed, or a top section that's settled or leaning, these require taking material down and building it back correctly. We do full and partial chimney rebuilds in natural stone and brick, including re-setting the crown to drain correctly and installing or replacing the chimney cap. The goal is a chimney that doesn't need work again for a generation.
Stone Chimney Restoration
Older Maine homes often have natural fieldstone or cut stone chimneys that are worth preserving. We work carefully on these, stabilizing loose stone, re-setting shifted courses, repointing with a lime-based mortar that's compatible with the original rather than modern Portland cement, which can trap moisture and damage old stone. If the chimney is original to the house and worth keeping, we'd rather restore it than replace it.
